You won't have to travel far to visit one of Frank Lloyd Wright's most treasured compositions. Designed and built between 1903 and 1905, The Darwin D. Martin House is located at 125 Jewitt Parkway , a residential neighborhood of Buffalo, Erie County. Although it is still going through a major restoration, It's open to the public! By the end of February, 2007, the complex of several buildings will be done.
The Martin House was the home of Isabelle and Darwin Martin, an area entrepreneur. After selecting architect Frank Lloyd Wright to design the property, the two men became close friends that lasted until Martin's death in 1935.
The Martin House ranks among Wright's greatest and important projects from Wright's Prairie School era. Walking inside gives you the feeling of being closed in at first then released into a large open space. It happens throughout the tour intentionally. This was one of Wright's signature design concepts.
There is a basic one-hour tour for $15 adults, $13 for seniors, $10 for students. Specialty and in depth tours are also available. Reservations for all tours are a must! (716) 856-3858
